Honda Repair: 1990 Honda accord shifting problems, transmission control unit, honda accord

Question
I own a 1990 Honda accord that has about 132,000 miles. It has recently begun to have problems shifting. It does not stay fully engaged in 1st when I am sitting at lights. It also revs high shifting into 1st, when shifting from 1st to 2nd, and does not always shift into 3rd gear. It is an automatic transmission. I do not have a blinking "S" light and I am unsure of what might be cause this problem. It does not always have this problem though, a few days it shifted fine for a while then began having problems.

Answer
Greg, these transmissions (A/T) from 1990 to 1993 in Accords are the same. And they have the same problems as there age increases and wear and tear from daily driving. Lack of maintenance is the other huge component.

First, and foremost, check your ATF level. And continue checking at monthly intervals!

Then have the codes from the transmission control unit specifically read, documented, and cleared. You can do this yourself in your own garage and a paperclip. If there are codes then deal with them until they do not recur. Once the codes are clear flush the ATF and only use Honda ATF. This should be performed every 30K to 50K depending on your driving habits. This should keep you busy and will guide you in the direction for repair and service.
