Honda Repair: 1999 Honda Accord intermittent AC failure, phillips head screws, dash vents

Question
I have a 1999 Honda Accord 2 door Coupe with 145,000 miles.  The problem I am currently experiencing is intermittent.  While driving and while idling at stop lights, my AC and center console unit (area on the dash above the radio) will "go out."  Basically this means that the air will continue to blow, but will no longer be cold and the small lights that indicate the AC settings (dash vents, dash and floor vents, floor and defrost, defrost only, etc.) will go out.  While in the the AC is out, no matter what buttons I push, I cannot change any settings other than the ability to turn the air on or off.  After a while, the center console lights will simply come back on and the air will again turn cold.  There does not seem to be a specific time between episodes of turning off and on, and although I originally suspected an ambient temperature correlation, the problem still occurs now that the weather has turned colder and I only need the AC for defrost purposes.  Is this and electric fault, bad fuse (I've changed or swapped most of them around), or other component that an "average" mechanic like myself can fix or will I have to rely on the dealership to track down and repair the electric or wiring fault?  Any ideas would be helpful.  Thanks for your time.

Sincerely,
Tim

Answer
Tim, fairly common problem when these Honda's reach 120K+. Climate control instrument cluster is just failing. Whether it be an electrical fault or just abuse from years of pushing buttons or switches. Whichever try to look up a local Honda recycler and purchase this unit used but, from a car with lower miles. Should still give you a warranty. Fairly novice to intermediate mechanical experience to remove and replace this unit. Mostly trim a few phillips head screws and some patience and you will be back in business. Reference the internet for details.
