Honda Repair: back lights, electrical specialist, stereo shop

Question
my rear running lights on my 94 honda accord are not working.  It keeps popping the fuse every time I turn on my lights.  I took it to a mechanic twice and he disconnected my radio and cig lighter cause he said it was sucking up to much power but it still pops the fuse.  what is the problem

Answer
Kathleen, as much as I hate to say it I will. The mechanic you took your car too is an idiot.

The rear tail lights have absolutely nothing to do with the stereo or cig lighter. If you keep popping fuses immediately then you have a positive (+) or hot wire coming into contact with the a negative (-) or ground wire. Fairly simple fix = find where the (+) wire is contacting the (-) chassis ground. It is coming from the rear tail light area somewhere. Have you recently done some work yourself or had someone do some work to the rear of the vehicle? Removing the tail lights or plugs in order too replace bulbs is what i would suspect. Perhaps you pinched a wire? Or had a damaged wire previously that you did not know of and now after replacing carpeted areas and what not it is making contact. It is very uncommon for a (+) wire to just break and make contact with the (-) but, not unheard of. If you dont feel like doing this yourself take the vehicle to a reputable automotive electrical specialist or perhaps a stereo shop could help you.
