Honda Repair: 1994 Honda Accord EX Has No Power, honda accord ex, torque converter

Question
Hi,

I have a 94 Honda Accord EX, automatic transmission, with approximately 130,000 miles.  Today my car seemed to lose power as I was driving it.  It did not seem to be an engine problem because the engine continued to run and rev like normal.  I had come to a stop and when I tried to move forward again I had to rev the engine over 4,000 rpm to get any movement.  Shortly after that, as I tried to pull up a short but steep hill it seemed to totally disengage and no amount of revs would make it move forward, luckily this happened within sight of my house. I thought that perhaps my transmission was leaking and had run out of fluid (this has happened before because I live on very rough country roads and had actually cracked the transmission housing once before) but checking the fluid and looking under the car revealed that that was not the issue this time.  To add to the mystery, I went back to the car this evening and started it up and tried to move it forward.  It clicked into gear and pulled up the hill to my house like it always has before.  Any help and direction you can offer would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks

Answer
Ethan, torque converter. This is failing you. They will slip if they do not have the adequate amount of pressure to press against the flex plate to hold a gear. Unfortunately the transmission needs to be removed in order to gain access to replace this component. Whichever when the transmission fluid temperature warms up the torque converter will fail you. Probably good for short distances for now but, will completely fail you, so repair it soon. Only use Honda ATF too. Re-manufactured units are around $100-$120. Honda ATF $35. Remove the transmission. Install this part if you are mechanically savvy. You can break the transmission if not installed properly.
