Honda Repair: 94 honda civic clutch, clutch master cylinder, clutch slave cylinder

Question
QUESTION: my 94 honda civic - I can switch the clutch into different gears when the car is off, but not when it is on... do u know the cause or how to fix this?

thanks
J

ANSWER: J, does the clutch pedal work properly or not when the car is off or on? Replace the clutch master cylinder. Or it might be low on fluid. Or it might need to be bled. Clutch master cylinder takes DOT 3 brake fluid. Check the reservoir. You have a hydraulically operated clutch which is self adjusting.

QUESTION: Thanks for ur quick response... i just added fluid
realizing that may be the problem, it was dry/empty
of fluid, may explain why I had the pedal to the floor
to switch gears...
But my clutch is stuck still when the car is running..
does that mean the cylinder needs to be replaced? &
Do u have any estimates on how much it would cost?

Thanks
jk

Answer
Bleed the clutch slave cylinder. There is a small fitting with a hole in it. It is located near the transmission (the valve). Similar to brakes. Manually pull out the clutch and depress the clutch while opening the valve to allow fluid to flow through the tube. Have a friend help you!
