Honda Repair: High Mount Brake Light-2002 Accord, filament bulbs, dual filament

Question
2002 Honda Accord EX V-6 4 door.  The brake light indicator went on and with the car in park the only rear light not working was the high mount.  I replaced the bulb and the indicator went out until I put the car in gear, then it came on and stayed on again. The bulb works fine, I changed the new bulb with a side brake lignt and I noticed all the brake light bulbs were cool except the high mount.  It was warm/hot to the touch like a bulb that had been on for a long time, so  maybe the light bulb works but isn't getting the signal to stop lighting up when the brake pedal isn't depressed.  What can I do?

Answer
Karen, odd situation you are having, puzzling... Hmmmm... The "high mount" light is generally referred to as a "third brake light". Have you checked all of your brake light bulbs 100%? There should be either 3 or 5 (not 100% on that Accord.) Now that all of the brake lights activate when you depress the brakes. Let off the brakes and turn on your parking lights make sure that all of the marker - running lights are on. Some of the bulbs back there are dual-filament bulbs. Meaning they perform 2 functions. Brake light (bright). And marker - running lights (not as bright). The bulbs will get hot to the touch so be careful. Also, inspect all of the bulb holders/contacts for damage, heat warp, etc. This can cause electrical issues from time to time and should be replaced or repaired as necessary. You can also use a di-electric grease that you inject into each of the electrical holders for the bulbs. This will help prevent moisture build-up and/or rust. Hope this helps...
