Honda Repair: Old Acura eval., power steering rack, honda motor co

Question
QUESTION: I've inherited a 1990 Acura Legend LS 2 door coupe. It was very well maintained most of its life, but has lately had some problems. The power steering (PS) has a hitch (or lag) when it's cold but gets better as it heats up - and of course it's better when under power. The fluid level never goes down. I suspect the pump, am I right? My wife hardly notices it when she drives, but I'm still concerned. Also, there is a small oil leak, and it does burn a little oil. But the oil level hasn't gone down in about 60 mi. since we received it. What are your thoughts about the PS, and in general about keeping this car & fixing it up? All other systems seem to be A-OK, incl. tires, brakes, all but the body & CD player. Thanks.

ANSWER:   Congratulation, that is a very nice vehicle to own & drive. When all "Systems are Go" it drives like a dream.
One of my favorites from Honda Motor Co..
As far as the P/S pump you may be correct providing that power steering rack is NOT leaking internally. Sometimes the P/S rack leak will not show when the rack boots are in good shape & won't let the fluid out.
As far as keeping the vehicle, it really depends on the mileage & what shape the vehicle is in.
Make sure the windows are tinted, to keep the sun light/heat out. The interiors of these vehicle are very sensitive to the sun light and heat.
Otherwise, these vehicles are very reliable providing the oil changes, timing belt & water pump & the transmission services are performed on them in a timely manner.
 Good luck.

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: Thank you for your rapid & knowledgable reply. If I may, I'd like to ask a followup. The P/S rack is a new term to me, and if that's the problem do you have a ballpark idea of the cost to repair? Also the cost if it's the pump? These repairs are beyond me. I will not hold you to any estimate you have, but would greatly appreciate anything you have to offer. Thanks again. All 10's.

Answer
P/S(Power Steering) rack could cost anywhere from $200.00 to $850.00.
Depending on where you purchase it.I would recommend purchasing a
re manufactured P/S rack from the dealer. They last the longest.

As far as the P/S pump, it may be leaking from main front seal & letting air into the system, causing the intermittent hard feel in the steering wheel. Those run anywhere from $150.00 to $250.00 range.

Good luck. I know you will enjoy this vehicle.
