Honda Repair: Valves, interference engines, honda motors

Question
I have a 91 Accord SE the timing belt went out due to a seized water pump I am curious if there was valve damage wouldn't I hear valves being bent? I have heard that Honda motors have good clearance between the valves and pistons I just figures if the valves were bent that I would hear a crunch or some type of metal to metal noise. Also what are the common signs of bent valves as far as after I have replaced the timing belt and have the car running?
Thanks, Jon

Answer
Honda engines are what they call "Interference" engines.
If the timing belt brakes at higher RPM's the pistons will hit the valves.
When that happens, you will hear absolute "Silence", meaning your engine will stop instantly.......:(
Unfortunately more than 90 of the time, when the timing belt brakes the  pistons will hit the valves.
As far as "Bent valve symptoms", you will have some abnormal noise in the engine after you replace the timing belt. Or the engine will run rough.
Remember the Honda recommendation: Replace timing belt every 90K miles in normal driving conditions.
Replace timing belt every 60k miles in severe driving conditions.
