Honda Repair: Instrument Cluster Lights, cluster test, gauge cluster

Question
We just purchased a 1992 Civic LX 4 door automatic transmission for gas mileage. The car is in pretty good shape. Everything works but the Instrument Cluster lights. In the day light when you do need your head lights the P R N D etc. lights work but at night when you turn on the head lights none of the instrument cluster lights work. I noticed today when we were cleaning it when you turn the head light switch you could get them to flicker a couple of times but they would not stay on. I'm not sure what needs to be replaced.

Answer
Kelly, the civic is a great purchase and very reliable as long as you keep the maintenance up. As far as the lights go, check the under dash fuses. Which are located under the driver side area. There is a fuse dedicated specifically for the Instrument cluster/Gauge cluster. Test with a test light and visibly look at the fuse itself with the lights turned ON. If that doesn't solve the problem then I would recommend replacing the arm on the steering column. This is a common problem for these turn style switches to go bad after years of use. Also, you can buy it new or used from a Honda Recycler. This should solve the problem. (I have a 1991 Honda Civic 4D AT and just replaced the arm in my car.)
