Honda Repair: 1986 Honda Civic stalling, vacuum leaks, vacuum lines

Question
I recently bought a 1986 Honda Civic 1.3L Hatchback (carburetor), no a/c, 230,000 miles.

When starting it up in the morning, or after it’s sat for quite a while, I have
no problem with it cranking and starting. Starts right up. Right after it starts, it sounds like it wants to go to high idle  but stalls out ….unless I keep giving it gas. After about 5 minutes, it runs fine…..no stalling with a smooth idle.

What I’ve done since I bought the car:
Put on a new rebuilt carburetor along with a new insulator block (gasket)
Replaced spark plugs
Replaced fuel filter
Checked fuel pump
Checked for vacuum leaks
……Still having the same problems. It does need a new muffler and I think the timing belt was replaced at 180,000 miles.
Any help with this frustrating problem would be appreciated.

Answer
Hi Kern, you are working in the right direction with this problem. Although (Carb.) models I am not too familiar with. I would check the Carburetor and make sure it is set appropriately. Check timing. Check choke. This is a cold start, idle or choke issue with the carb itself and will be centralized in these areas for focus and adjustment of the problem. Double check all other areas around carb for vacuum lines, etc. Inspect Distributor cap and rotor as well. Are you throwing any check engine codes when this happens? Let me know if this helps...
