Honda Repair: 1992 Honda Accord LX - A/T, transmission control unit, change gears

Question
My 1992 Honda LX Accord with A/T shift light is very bright for drive on the instrument panel.  However, the car is not shifting properly.  It doesn't feel like it's in gear at all but eventually does change gears.  If you manually start out in 1 and then shift it to 2 then to 3, it seems OK but something is clearly wrong with it.
I have 165,000 miles on it and recently spent about $2,500 on it within the past two years - paint, tires, other mechanical work.
Any idea how / where to diagnose this and what the cost could be??  Do love this little car !!
Thank you.

Answer
It sounds like maybe the transmission is slipping. Most people don't rebuild these anymore since a used or remanufactured one is just as cost effective with more of a warranty. If the D light was flashing and it wasn't shifting I would say it was the transmission control unit as these accords did have problems with these. Hope that helped and if you have anymore questions please feel free to contact me.
