Honda Repair: 1999 Honda Passport, fuel level sensor, honda passport

Question
I have a 99 Honda Passport, and the fuel light comes on eventhough the gas tank is fuel and the dial shows empty.
When I fill up gas the light will go off, the dial will show full. The light will come on after an est. of 20 miles and the dial will show empty or almost empty.
Can you advice as to how I can fix this problem? Can I do it myself or do I need to take it to an Autoshop to fix?

Answer
99-01 passports had a problem with the fuel level sensor.  It would sometimes turn the check engine light on as well as the fuel gauge not working correctly.  The only way to fix it is to drop the fuel tank and replace the fuel level sensor/fuel pump assembly.  Goes as one entire assembly.  Costs between 200-300 from the dealership.  I wouldn't recommend used as you will get the same problem as you are trying to fix.
