Honda Repair: 1999 crv cutting out while driving, engine failure, dash lights

Question
my 99 crv has 180,000 miles. recently cutting out and dying while driving, usually cranks back up in prk or neu and drives ok. made a strange grinding then ticking vs. thumping noise last night and died. engine will turn over but wont catch and start now. what could this be? recent fuel filter replaced and oil/air filter change

Answer
The cutting out while driving is probably the ignition switch.  There was a recall on this so call the dealership and see if yours has been done or if it falls under the recall.  Do the dash lights go out like you turned the car off?

The noise sounds really bad.  How fast does it turn over?  My first guess from your description would be either a broken timing belt or engine failure.  Either would be very bad for the engine.  This usually results in serious engine work being required.
