My 2003 Honda started making a terrible rattling sound when the A/C was on.  It stopped as soon as the A/C was off. Withthe hood open it sounded like it was coming from th compressor. Now the A/C does not work and theere is no longer a rattle.  Is it the compressor and if so how much is this likely to cost?

Yes, its the compressor and call your honda dealership and ask them about it.  They "unofficially" extended the warranty on those because they had a lot of the a/c compressors lock up.  Call them first because you don't want to have to pay for that system if possible.  Also remember if you don't get anywhere with the dealership you can always call American Honda.  This of course, only will apply if you don't have a ton of miles on your car.
