Honda Repair: 90 Accord does not shift properly, transmission control module, honda accord

Question
I just bought a 1990 Honda Accord. Now the "S" light has come on and stays on. It does not matter if the normal/sports buttom is pushed in or not. Since the light has come on the automatic transmission does not shift properly. It will shift to reverse, but will not go through the drive gears. If in D4 it takes of in D2 and stays there, but I can manually put it in D1. I can shift to D2, but then it stays in D2. It will not shift to D3 or D4, and I can't manially shift it into D3 or D4 either.

When it first start it stoped after the car sat overnight.
The following morning the "S" was off and the tranny shifted properly. the next day the "S" light came back on and the tranny started acting up again.

I hope that you can point me in the right direction. Thanks!

Answer
These cars are very bad about the TCM (transmission control module) going bad.  It will quit shifting and start out in the wrong gear.  The S-light will also stay on solid.  I would check to see if there is any codes in the computer.  You can do this by locating the two pin blue connector behind the right kick panel and jumping it with a paper clip.  The S-light should flash if there are any codes in it.  If it doesn't flash, the control unit is bad.  About $600 new.  If you can find a used one you will need one from 90-91 only as the 92-93 is different.
