Honda Repair: 1988 Prelude Si Check Engine, bad signal, engine didn

Question
Hey Bill,
I've been using all you q & a from others to help troubleshoot my 1988 Accord Lx. Found out that the CVs needed to be replaced and other minor things too. UH, she got totaled though...poor girl. Thanks to insurance $, I got a smoothe looking white 1988 prelude Si and shes been treating me well. A lot of potential.

Anyway,
the engine is fairly clean, tuned up, new gaskets, wires, distributer, etc. I was turning a corner one afternoon and it died on me. I thought it waas the fuel pump like on my Accord. Turned out that the dude that tuned the engine didn't torque the bolts to specs and my distributer was just laying there to the side of the cams. So I threw it back on, started right up. The problem now is that my 'Check Engine' light comes on every so often. I was thinking mabie my valves and/or injectors are dirty. Timing could be off. fluids are lookin good.

few of my 'genious' friends said that it could just be a bad signal being relayed to the ecu and that can be reset by disconnecting the power?...Im not sure.

Answer
Brett, It's always nice to have friends that can solve ally your problems, even you car problems. Too bad they are not mechanics. Anyway I would bet that you have a loose wire or a component that is going bad and it is causing the check engine light to come on. Either wait until it is on all the time or try to get the code from the ECU when it comes on again. Once you get the code you can further diagnosis the problem. To get the code look under the passenger side carpet, (where your feet go) Pull the carpet back and that is your ESU. In one of the top corners there will be a square that you look down through, I can't remember but you either start the car or turn the key to ACC and then look in that square. You will get a number of flashes, those # of flashes equal's what code.
Let me know and I will let you know what it means.
Good luck.
Bill
