Honda Repair: problem with 89 honda prelude, fuel delivery system, fuel pressure regulator

Question
Hi Bill, i have a problem with my 1989 honda prelude (2 door) at the moment my engine light is on all the time and when acelarating at 3000 to the 4000 rev, the car jurks and wont go any faster, it kinda cuts out, the second i hit this spot i back right off, i have had friends look at it for my saying that it sounds like i needed a new fuel filter, which they replaced as well as air filter, but it is still doing the same thing, i am currently travelling at least 60km a day 30 to and 30 back from work, i dont wont to keep driving it while its like this, but being christmas i cant afford to take it in to be looked at, as being a female i am also worried of being ripped off, like in the past.
any surgestions would be muchly appreciative thank you.

This is a strange one. My guess is that there is a problem with the fuel delivery system or the emission control. Replacing the air filter and the fuel filter are not bad areas to start with since they are relatively inexpensive. You may have a weak fuel pump, a bad fuel pressure regulator or a bad sensor somewhere in the system. The problem you are going to run into is that you will end up replacing a lot of parts and some will get very expensive and still not fix the problem. Many times it is less expensive taking it to a trusted mechanic rather than replacing a lot of parts. Cars have a way of failing when we are at our lowest ($$$) level. Find a mechanic that is recommended, so you can have some level of comfort. Stay away from tire stores, muffler shops and department stores. Go to a repair facility, explain the problem and take them for a test drive to demonstrate the problem. I know money is tight, but you don't want the car stuck on the road somewhere, you will need a tow on top of a repair and you know it will happen at the most inopportune time.
Sorry I can't be of more help. Good luck.
Bill
