Honda Repair: Honda Prelude 94s overheating!, radiator fluid, honda prelude

Question
Hi Bill,
My prelude (approx 150,000km) overheated then stalled last week. Roadside assistance said that it was a thermostat problem as it was only drawing water from one pipe. That was replaced and the car was fine for a week.. until it happened again. It has obviously been losing water and after overheating drank approx 3litres.

However a mechanic has checked for leaks and couldnt find a source. The fan is fine, no leaks. He has told me to purchase a new radiator cap for the time being and see how it runs. Do you think this is the problem and solution? Could it be the head gaske? He has not checked this as yet. I am just hoping its not.

Regards
Dan

Answer
Dan:
I think you got good advice. I would purchase the new cap and see if your problem is resolved, also make sure the hose going to the reservoir is in good condition. Check the radiator fluid level every day to make sure it is okay. The fluid could be leaking past the water pump seep hole and you may not see it as it will leak when it's under pressure. Check to make sure the radiator is okay also, look inside and make sure you can see that it is in good condition. The reason it could be drawing from one pipe could be the water pump is not working or is very weak. It could be the head gasket, but I would make sure everything else is done (water pump, radiator) before thinking about the head gasket. My bet is the water pump is bad.
Let me know how it turns out.
Good luck.
