Honda Repair: CV boot of Honda Civic 1999, honda civic 1999, cv boot

Question
Hello Bill,

During a recent oil change, I was told that my CV boot needed to be replaced. The CV boot had a tear in it according to the mechanic. He told me that it would cost $250 to replace. Does that sound like a resonable price? Is there anything I can do to make sure that the CV boot really needs to be replaced?

Thanks for your help,

Rahul

Answer
Rahul:
You can check the boot, it is located on the inside of the tire and you should be able to see that it is torn and grease coming out. I'd say $250 sounds a little high, you can get a halfshaft (which includes the CV boot) for about $80 and I would expect to pay $100 to $120 to have it installed. If the price quote was from Honda, I'd say that is about right, you always pay more from the dealer; otherwise you should find it a little less somewhere else.
Good luck.
Bill
