Honda Repair: 00 check engine light @ 72,000, spark plugs, mechanic

Question
Is there some timer that wants me to change the belt
or is it probably something else like spark plugs, which haven't been changed yet.

The check engine light indicates that there is a problem. You need to take the car to a mechanic and they can get the code and diagnosis the problem. There is also a maintenance light that comes on every 6000 miles to inform you that it is time to do regular maintenance.
