Honda Repair: Trans oil change, filter change, drain plug

Question
Hi Bill,

I own three Hondas, All 98s. Civic EX, Acc. LX 4 Cyl, And Acc. EX V6. I want to change the trans oil on all three. I just did an motor oil change on the LX. I believe I saw the trans drain plug 3/8” on the front side of the trans. I was told just drain and refill on all three cars, no trans filter change. Is this true? Do you how much oil each change needs. Should I use Honda fluid or can I use an after market brand? Any other hints

Thank You

Don

Answer
Don:
Yes, the 3/8" drain plug is for the transmission fluid. What you were told was correct, just drain and refill, no filter. The 4 cyl Accord takes 5 qts, the six takes 6.2 qts., I don't have the specs for the Civic. The amounts are total and you will not drain all of it, I would plan on 3 to 4 qts. and make sure you do not over fill. Check your owners manual, it should tell you how much will be needed for a change or just measure what you take out. I would use only a name brand fluid, not Honda. I use Valvoline, but any name brand would be okay.
Good luck
Bill
