Motorcycle Repair: Suzuki Intruder backfire, suzuki intruder, bill silver

Question
Dear Bill,

Hi Bill, I own Suzuki Intruder 94 1400cc. I had one problem with my bike, that my while riding this bike, if I let go the throttle, there are a loud sound came from the muffler, similar to explosion sound, an d its quite loud (does it's called backfired ?) and sometimes there fire came from the exhaust. I already tried to clean both of the carburetors, but seems doesn't solve the problem.

Can you help me with your opinion regarding this matter ? Thank you very much

Regard,

Handry

Answer
If the stock mufflers have been modified, then the engine is running too lean.

I don't have experience with this brand/model.

http://www.intruderalert.com/workshop/tips.cfm for some help.

I did go on-line to see a photo of a carburetor and I see that there is a anti-backfire diaphragm shown on the rear carb, so there may be one on the front carb, too.

When the diaphragm fails, there is an air leak to the engine and the anti-backfire function does not work.

The diaphragm is under the cover with the three screws.
