Honda Repair: Honda Passport (2000) needs new engine, honda passport, auto parts stores

Question
recently, jiffy lube did a real job on the oil plug and major engine repair was necessary.  Honda dealership said a new engine was required (6cyl).  Do you have any thoughts on how much a new engine should cost and why they are saying that it still needs to go to a machine shop for cylinder boring?  I'm thinking they're trying to pad the cost.  What other questions should I ask?  Thanks for your help.

Answer
Steve:
Most likely they are rebuilding the engine and that would require machine shop work. Hopefully JL is paying for the new engine. A new (rebuilt) engine would be about $1500. You might want to call around to some auto parts stores and get a quote. Make sure of what the warranty is and you will also have a break-in period just like a new car. Check everything out, from an operation stand point because this is a major service and everything will be removed and re-installed.
Good luck
