Honda Repair: Spark Plugs fouling, proper lubrication, piston rings

Question
Hey Bill,

I have a 90 accord

I have oil on my spark plugs. I overfilled the the engine in error. I have since emptied the excess oil and changed the plugs.

Why should I still be getting oil on my new plugs?

Can too much oil also cause overheating. I have been having overheating problems sinc ethis oil incident

Answer
Curt:
It is unlikely that you overfilled enough to hurt the engine. You can go up to about a quart over without doing damage, but I would not recommend doing this on purpose. If you have oil on your plugs then the oil is leaking past worn valve guides or piston rings and by overfilling the oil you may have helped the symptom show up sooner, but I don't think you caused the problem. You want to take care of this right away because you can do serious engine damage if you are not getting the proper lubrication. The overheating problem would not be related, you would need to check the radiator, water pump and thermostat. I would start with the thermostat since it's cheap and easy to replace and then look at the radiator, then the water pump. Look inside the radiator and if you can see the holes in there are clogged then the radiator is probably bad, otherwise I replace the water pump. With a car that is 15-16 years old things just go bad.
Good luck
Bill
