Honda Repair: Honda Prelude 94, honda prelude 94, honda prelude

Question
Hi Bill,

I know you are a Honda Accord expert but since the Prelude is of the same make, I figure your advice/opinion will still be on target.

My 94' Honda Prelude Si is getting old and has been driven under less than perfect conditions (I currently reside on the remote island of Madagascar).

Due to the bad roads, the car now needs to have a complete suspension review and several parts will need to be replaced (shock absorbers, coils?, all bushings, etc...). Can you give me some advice as to what to replace first, etc...

Since I reside so far away, I need to order as many parts as necessary and possible at one time to avoid the hassles of international shippings and horrendous local customs agents, etc.

With regards to the engine, everything is still in excellent shape (regular maintenance + oli changes etc....

The mileage is only 70K after more than 10 years!

I am also havig problems with the brakes that are kinda soft now and not very responsive as they once were, what to do? The local mechanics are used handling ancient peugeots and Renaults and don't seem to have much of a clue since they may have only seen this model car twice in their life, for an oil change!

To make things short, please help me as I want to keep my Honda which has been terrific for me over the years.

Thanks in advance for your assistance and advice

Jean-Louis

Answer
Jean-Louis:
It is really hard to say what to replace first, other than saying to replace what's broke. I guess you would want to start with the springs and struts, and may be the upper and lower control arm.
As for the brakes, check the pads and rotors, they may both need to be replaced. Also you will need to bleed your brakes.
Good Luck.
