Honda Repair: Overheating, coolant system, radiator fans

Question
My '89 prelude si will reach normal operating temperatures normally and stay there for a few moments then the engine skyrockets to overheating while the coolant spills everywhere. This model seems to have two radiator fans but only one will ever come on.  Do you think the problem is the fan or do I have a leak in my coolant system at high pressures or do you have any suggestions for me?  Any help would be appreciated.  Thank you very much.

Answer
Mark,
The 2 fans on the radiator are:
1: radiator fan
2: condenser fan (for the A/C)
I can't remember on that model if they are both supposed to come on when the engine gets hot. But there is a way to tell if that other fan is working. You need to turn on the A/C and check to make sure both fans are working. They should both come on. If not, you have a bad fan most likley.
Also check the thermostat. Make sure it is not sticking. If all checks out ok, you may have a bad head gasket. (not cheap to repair!)
Further tests will need to be done at a shop to pin point that, but if you do those few things I mentioned, it will save you some money and possibly fix the car.
Good luck and thanks for the question.
