Honda Repair: clutch install, clutch disc, clutch master

Question
i have a 92 honda civic ex 4door. the clutch went out...hard to push pedal down and will not disengage clutch. my question is how difficult is it to replace a clutch? i am wondering if i can do it in my driveway since shops ask an arm and a leg for installation fee. also, is it usually necessary to replace the whole clutch or is only a clutch kit used?

Answer
Brent,
To replace the clutch on your car is a lot of work. If you do not have a trans jack or a lift, it will be very difficult. I have done it before and you must lay on your back and drop the tranny on your chest, then wiggle out from under the car. Not a whole lot of fun. Especially if you have never done one before.
You need to replace the clutch disc, throw-out bearing, pressure plate, and the axle seals. You must also check the clutch master and slave cylinders. They  are usually leaking too.
There is a reason why the shop charges a lot. It is a big job.
Good luck,
Gene
