Hyundai Repair: 98 excel, fuse box, hazard switch

Question
My daughters excels blinkers aren't working. they worked when the headlights were turned off. and when the car was turned off and turned back on now they are not working at all. Have checked the fuse bank under bonnet but cant find where the fuse is? If not the fuse could you give me an idea what this might cause this.

Answer
Hi, Susan.  Presuming your vehicle is set up similarly to those in the U.S., the fuses for the hazard/turn lamps are in the fuse box inside the car at the left kick panel.  According to my schematic, the fuses are the top in the right column and the third from the top in the left column.

Most problems with turn signal and hazard lamps are caused by a faulty hazard switch or flasher relay.

My first suggestion is to check whether the hazard lamps are working.  If so, did the turn signals start working after you cycled the switch?  This would be an indication that the switch is defective.

If the hazard lamps did not work, quickly cycle the switch a few more times.  If this causes the hazard lamps to begin working, again suspect the hazard switch as the primary problem.

Otherwise, once you've verified the fuses are okay, you'll need to go to the hazard relay to do some testing with a standard test lamp.

With the ignition on, place the clip on bare metal behind the dashboard.  Then, at the relay, probe the white wire.  The lamp should light.  If not, you do not have power at the relay.  The most frequent cause is a defective hazard switch, but if you'd like to determine this for certain, you'll next need to remove the hazard switch and test for power in and out of the switch.

Presuming you do have power at the relay, next place the clip on the white wire referenced above and then probe the black wire.  Again, the lamp should light.  If it doesn't, you have an open circuit somewhere in the ground wiring that you'll need to locate.

Presuming the lamp again lit, reclip the lead to the bare metal and probe the grey/white wire.  This should cause the relay to flash.  If it doesn't, you have a problem with the relay.
