Answer
Hi, Robin.  When the word "sputter" is used, a misfire is typically the culprit.  Most misfires are caused by secondary ignition components (plugs, plug wires, coils).  Since you've already replaced the plugs and a coil, you might check the plug wires as well.  In addition, if you have a four cylinder engine, there are two ignition coils, so you may need the other coil as well.

In most cases, when a misfire is present, a diagnostic trouble code indicating the misfiring cylinder is present.  If your check engine lamp has been coming on, it's probably a good idea to read the trouble codes, as this will likely lead you more directly to the faulty component.  Most local auto parts chains will now read diagnostic trouble codes for free.  I always recommend however, that you should not use their diagnostic advice, only the the trouble code.  If you'd like help analyzing the trouble code, please follow up with the code here.
