Question
The car will not shift from first to second gear or beyond. Also cluster drive light is not indicating that it is in the drive position. The sport mode will shift from first to second only not 345 gear.Could this be a prnd shifter problem.I took it to autozone and there were no codes.Any help will be appreciated.Thank you

Answer
Hi, Ralph.  This indeed could be a problem with the shifter.  If the transmission conrol module (TCM) is receiving a signal from the shifter that it's in the sport mode, it will not shift to the next higher gear unless it also receives the upshift input from the shifter or the engine rpm becomes so high that it's necessary for the transmission to shift to prevent engine damage.

Unfortunately, the best way to check the shifter is with a scan tool capable of communicating with the TCM.  This will enable the person examining the car to see the status of all the shifter switches.  Often, when there is a problem with the shifter/switches, there are no diagnostic trouble codes set.  If you believe this to be the problem, your best bet is probably to take the car to the dealer for diagnosis.

The "D" indicator not coming on could be related to a shifter issue, or the bulb could be burned out.

You might also register for an account at www.hmaservice.com and look at the technical service bulletins (TSBs) there.  There is one TSB which is specifically dedicated to shiftronic diagnosis.
