Hyundai Repair: esc light off on and gear is not working, transmission control module, shift lock

Question
What is esc off light?  It keep showing.  Also, the gear is not working.  It is not shifting at all.  What is the problem?

Answer
Hi, Sunah.  The ESC OFF lamp indicates that your stability control system has detected a malfunction.  To determine the nature if the problem, it is necessary to interrogate the ESC module for trouble codes.  Special tooling is required to do this.

As for your car not shifting, that depends on whether you're referring to the movement of the shifter lever or the actual automatic shifting of the transmission while you drive the car.

If the gearshift will not move, there are a number of potential issues.  But in conjunction with the ESC OFF lamp, I'd suspect that your brake lamp switch is not working properly.  For safety reasons, your car is equipped with an interlock that makes it impossible for you to shift out of park without having your foot on the brake.  If the brake switch isn't working, this will cause the shift lock module to not allow the shifter to be moved.  In addition, the ESC module monitors the brake switch, so a failure of the switch would meet both symptoms.

If your transmission does not shift automatically while the vehicle is moving, there could be a host of different problems with the shifter, numerous sensors, or your transmission itself.  In this case an interrogation of the transmission control module (TCM) will most likely result in a diagnostic trouble code telling you the nature of the problem.
