Question
I have a Hyundai 1997 2.0 gls sonata , recently while driving the suddenly engine jerks & switches off , this happens  quite  often. I cannot go more than 3 kilometres before this starts happening.I normally start again . keep on high rev , just to avoid car stopping.

Answer
Hi, Jason.  There are two reasonably common things I've seen that you may want to check.

1.  Check your throttle cable and the adjustment of your idle switch.  The should be closed with your foot off the accelerator.  If there is no slack in the throttle cable, it'll hold the switch open, or if the switch is misadjusted, it'll may remain open even when the throttle is closed.  If the switch remains open, the engine control module (ECM) will not know that your foot is off the throttle, and it will not attempt to idle the engine.  On your vehicle, this switch is part of the throttle position sensor.

2.  Check your idle actuator.  I've seen several instances of the gasket between the halves of the throttle body leaking coolant into the throttle body itself, allowing it to enter and corrode the idle actuator.  Sometimes this results in an open circuit; sometimes a short.  If your idle actuator is not functioning for whatever reason, the ECM will be unable to adjust it to control your idle speed.  In addition, if the actuator is shorted, it may damage your ECM as well.
