Hyundai Repair: 1995 Sonata 3.0V6 G6AT stalling/stuttering, fuel management system, sonata 3

Question
Hi,

I'm from Austria, so please excuse my probably false expressions. I have the above mentioned car, which had very rarely some stuttering/stalling in the past 4 years. Lately it was ok for 1 year, but yesterday all came back, heavier than ever. When driving, suddenly the rpm go down to zero and back within a split of a second. The car just "jumps". Or it goes to zero, stays there until switching D-N-D - then it recovers. And the newest thing is complete dying, unregular idle, and starting problems.

I would really appreciat ANY suggestions... Thanks!

Answer
Hi, Kristof.  If your engine uses the same (or similar) fuel management system as the U.S. cars, you may have a problem with the optical sensor in the distributor.  While this sensor was typically very reliable, 1995 Sonatas seemed to have some trouble with it.  The typical symptom is exactly as described, that the engine will shut off momentarily or for a period of time.  The greatest difficulty is that because of the periodic nature, it's very difficult to reproduce and diagnose the problem in the shop.
