Hyundai Repair: XG 300 maintenance, timing belt, water pump

Question
I've owned my 01 XG 300 L since 2005.  It had 85k miles then and has 136k miles now.  As far as I know, it's on the original timing belt/chain.  I realize the factory guidelines for replacement are at 80k.  I have never driven this car hard & it still runs like a new car.  Money is tight but what is your recommendation for replacing the timing belt/chain?

Answer
Hi, Steve.  Unfortunately, there is no barometer as to exactly how long the timing belt will last before breaking.  The factory guidelines are to replace at 4 years or 60,000 miles.  If you're correct that it has never been replaced, you're now at more than double the time period and more than double the mileage.  And both of these are important as rubber deteriorates with age as well as use.

If money is tight enough that the timing belt is a big expense, then fixing the potential engine damage will certainly be cost prohibitive.  If you plan on keeping the car for a long period of time, you should probably replace the belt (and at this mileage, the water pump, too) now.  If you plan on only keeping it a short period of time longer, it may be more beneficial to take your chances.  But ultimately, you'll need to consider your financial situation, your plans, and the condition of the car in making the decision that's best for you.
