Hyundai Repair: Speed Sensor on 2003 Elantra GLS., vehicle speed sensor, speedometer gear

Question
QUESTION: How do I access the speed sensor on the trans-axle? On top through the hood? Jack it up and access under the car? Driver/Passenger side of the car?

Thank you.

ANSWER: Hi, William.  Presuming you have an automatic transmission, there are three speed sensors on the transmission (on the driver's side ot the car), and all are accessed on top through the hood opening.  These sensors are the input speed sensor, output speed sensor, and vehicle speed sensor.

If you can tell me which sensor you're replacing, I'll be happy to give you more precise instructions regarding replacement.

QUESTION: Sorry, I believe I found it.

It is actually a standard/ 5 speed.

It is the Speedometer and mileage odometer speed sensor.
It stopped on 137,600 miles and I cant tell how fast I am going.  Though I believe I found it on top of the transaxle
with a electrical wire attached.  Does this sound right?
Thanks again.

Answer
It sounds like you've located it, William.  As the manual transmission doesn't need any information to determine when to shift, it doesn't have the input or output speed sensor.

The sensor simply unscrews off the top of the differential.  You may need to remove the air box and air intake bellows to gain access.

I have, however, seen issues with both the sensor and the gear to which it attaches.  Once you've unscrewed the sensor off the transmission, you can remove the 10mm bolt underneath it and pull the speedometer gear and housing assembly out of the transmission.  Inspect the plastic gear attached to the assembly and verify it's in good condition and not worn.

Addendum:

I just realized you may be looking at the reverse switch.  The reverse switch is located on top of the transmission near the upper mount bracket.  The speed sensor is located all the way near the firewall on top of the differential near where the right axle comes out.
