Hyundai Repair: 2005 Elantra intermitent codes, 2005 hyundai elantra, vehicle speed sensor

Question
I have a 2005 Hyundai Elantra that has a real frustrating intermittent electrical issue. The check engine light comes on and stays on after starting. We took it to the local Auto store and they hooked it up to a diagnostic computer and it came back as a faulty speed sensor in the Transaxle. When we started up the car after testing the light went out and stayed out. Technician said it probably was a loose wire. ON the drive home the check engine light came on again. I checked the wires, wiggled, on the sensor and the light stayed on. I wiggled the wires under the left side, driver, dash where the diagnostic hook up is and the light went out. Problem solved! NOT! After driving for a while, less than 10 minutes light came back on. I Isolated a connector under there, wiggled it and light went off, then came back on again after 10 minutes or so of driving. I squirted a little bit of Dialectic grease into the connector and put it back together again. Light went off, and, yep, after 10 minutes or so it came back on again. What the heck is going on?
Thanks
Jim

Answer
Hi, Jim.  There are three speed sensors on your transmission.  In most cases, when I've seen a code for either the input or output speed sensor, the problem has been with that particular sensor itself, especially if the problem is intermittent.  However, if the code is for the vehicle speed sensor, then I've seen about as many sensors fail as I have the plastic gears attached to the sensor.  Every once in a while in any of the cases, the problem has been a wiring issue, but this is rare.

If you can provide me the trouble code (Pxxxx, where the x's represent numerical digits), I can direct you to the proper sensor.
