Will a transmission from a 2005 sonata work in a 1997 or 1998 sonata. Any answers would be very helpful.

Hi, Jasmine.  These are two completely different transmissions, and you won't be able to use one in place of the other.

From the information I'm gathering from the parts catalog, all V6s model year 1995-1998 used the same transmission.  

The four cylinder had three separate transmissions used, depending on date of manufacture.  Cars built prior to 7/1/94 used one transmission, cars built 7/1/94 to 7/1/96 (likely the end of 1996 model year production) used another, and cars built 7/1/96 and 6/30/98 (likely 1997 and 1998 model years) used yet another transmission.  The parts catalog indicates the three transmissions are *not* interchangeable.
