Question
I own a  1996 Hyundai Excel Classique sedan, manual transmission,my partner passed away recently and he would always service the car,I'm a single mum and would like to save a few dollars by purchasing the parts and putting them on the engine myself, could you tell me whats parts are required to do a regular service, and would this entail changing the leads as well as the spark plugs...I am a resident of Australia...

Answer
Hi, Tracey.  The items that need to be serviced will depend on how long it's been since they've last been serviced.  I'll attempt to give you a guide below.  I'm not sure what fuel management system your car has (as it may be different from the one here in the U.S.) so the list below may include some things that aren't present on your vehicle.

Change oil and filter -- every 5000km
Rotate tires -- every 10,000km
Replace air filter -- every 50,000km (more frequently if driven in dusty areas)
Replace coolant -- every 2 years
Replace spark plugs -- every 50,000km
Replace distributor cap and rotor -- every 50,000km
Replace plug leads -- this isn't typically listed in the maintenance schedule, but I'd recommend it every 100,000km.
Replace fuel filter -- every 90,000km
Replace transmission fluid -- every 50,000km

In addition, this you should check the drive belts, brakes, and suspension components to be sure they're in good condition.
