Hyundai Repair: 2001 Hyundai Elantra out put speed sensor, hyundai elantra, speed sensor

Question
I had the out put speed sensor replaced because the car would suddenly jolt and lock into third gear. Once I turned the car off and let if sit for a few minutes, it would run fine. After the new sensor was installed the transmission worked fine for three weeks. But suddenly last week it jolted into third gear again. I turned the car off, restarted it, and the transmission's been working fine ever since. Andy suggestions? The mechanic said there was no warranty for the the sensor. Does that sound right?

Answer
In regard to no warranty on the sensor, that doesn't sound right.  Most states have laws that require shops to warrant their work.  Presuming you purchased the sensor and the labor from the repair shop, I'd expect it to be warranted.

This doesn't imply, however, that there is no other problem causing your current issue.  Without having the car checked again, it's impossible to know whether the problem is with the output speed sensor or somewhere else.  If some other problem has occurred causing your problem, you shouldn't expect the shop to warrant that; they have little way of knowing what failures will be occurring in the future.
