Hyundai Repair: rpms and hesitating engine, throttle position sensor, air flow sensor

Question
When I start my 2002 Hyundai Sonata the engine RPM's shoot up to 4 on the screen and once I put it in gear it goes 30mph without me placing my foot on the gas pedal. Also when I drive it hesitates about every 20 feet so I can never fully accelerate.

Answer
Hi, Kevin.  Check for the following:

1.  Slack in the throttle or cruise control cable.  If the throttle cable is too tight, it'll cause the throttle to be held open.
2.  Large vacuum leaks such as a disconnected brake booster hose or PCV hose.
3.  Faulty or disconnected throttle position sensor.
4.  Loose air intake bellows between air flow sensor and throttle body.
