Hyundai Repair: 2003 Hyundai Tiburon’s Automatic Transmission, hyundai tiburons, time tim

Question
QUESTION: You ask me for the code. The only code is P1602

Below is the original note I sent to you the other day,I left it just to refresh your memory.

2003 Hyundai Tiburon’s Automatic Transmission
My daughter purchased this car and about as soon as she did I guess the transmission quit shifting.  It pretty much stays in one gear. I was unaware of it for a while and I suppose she didn't realize it was not shifting, she thought it shifted really smooth.  I have scanned the car and I at this point do not have the codes, and I have taken it to the dealer to scan the Transmission part as well.  The dealer told my daughter they didn't think anything major was wrong and that most likely it had a short somewhere, and that about all the help they offered my daughter. I have tried to find a repair manual so I can at least be familiar where different parts are located but I have been unable to find one for this year and model. All and any help would be appreciated. Thanks for your time Tim

ANSWER: Thanks for copying the original message, Tim.

According to my service information, P1602 is a code stored in the ECM (engine control module) that indicates it is not receiving data via the CAN communication line from the TCM (transmission control module).  Based on your description, there should also be some sort of trouble code stored in the TCM.  At this point, the code in the TCM is of prime importance; I'll need it to help determine whether the P1602 code was set because the TCM is not functioning properly or because the TCM has voluntary shut off communications on this line.

QUESTION: The car was taken and had the TCM scanned, the told my daughter at that time there was no code showing up, and there must be a short somewhere. They also told her that they could not give her an estimate on how long it could take to try to find problem, leaving her to think wow this could really be allot of money, especially when they could estimate their time. Can you help me in anyway in any direction to possible get this straightened out.Where is the TCM located on a 2003? I may seem like a moron but I do not know anything about this car. any help would be great

thank you for your time
Tim

Answer
Her read on the dealer may well be correct.  In most cases, the reason you won't receive an estimate up front is because it's unclear exactly how much disassembly, testing, and searching will be necessary to find the issue.

The TCM on the vehicle is located behind the left side of the dash and is on a bracket mounted to the firewall.

As I think about this issue, another scenario is that there is no DTC from the TCM because it isn't turning on and the scan tool will therefore not communicate with it.  If you're going to attempt to find the problem, details such as whether communication with the TCM is possible and whether there are any DTCs stored in it will be key.  Even though there may still be a great deal of searching to find the issue, knowing this information will help you know what you'll be looking for.
