Hyundai Repair: transmission problems, hyundai lantra, transmission control module tcm

Question
i was driving up a steep hill and transmission quit working immediately but engine is still running car is a 1994 Hyundai lantra 1.8 liter fluid level is perfect and it has  no gears in any selection

Answer
The transmissions in 1992-1995 Elantras were especially troublesome.  Most likely the problem is internal, requiring a rebuild or replacement.  Before concluding this is the problem, however, check for the following:

1.  Axle disengaged from transmission.  This will cause the vehicle to not move, but the speedometer will indicate movement.

2.  Broken, damaged, or detached shift cable.  If the cable doesn't move the shift lever on top of the transmission, the transmission may remain in park (or neutral) even though the shift indicator inside the car indicates otherwise.

3.  Defective transmission range switch.  If the transmission control module (TCM) does not receive the proper input regarding which gear has been selected, it may not increase line pressure enough to allow you to drive the car.
