Hyundai Repair: evap system, hyundai sonata gls, hyundai sonata

Question
1999 hyundai sonata gls v6. I have a hard time starting after i put gas in. The guage is near empty when i put the gas in. Then after i drive a little while the check engine light comes on. The car performs fine while driving after i get it started. The first time the code said I have a evap system leak. This has been going on for about 2 weeks the codes have been erased. The last time it happened was just a couple of days ago the code was po446. Please help

Answer
All these symptoms can be caused by a stuck open purge control valve.  In fact, the difficulty starting can only be linked to this cause.  The code P0446 indicates a vacuum in the evaporative emissions system, which can be caused by a stuck open purge control valve as well as a host of other reasons.  Since we know the valve needs to be replaced, start with that, clear the codes by disconnecting the battery for 10 seconds, and see if the check engine lamp returns again.
