Hyundai Repair: Cracks in tail lights 02 Hyundai Sonata. age or accident?, age cracks, hyundai sonata

Question
I have a dozen or so small cracks (1/2 long) in both my tail lens on my 02 hyundai sonata GLS.

I was recently rear ended )hard enough to bend the rear bumper support, but looking at the outside of the car, everything looks straight...

His insurance adjuster is saying the cracks in the tail lens don't look 'consistent' and must be 'age' cracks.

I've never heard of age cracks. Is this something that happens to this generation hyundai, or is he trying to smooth something over?

Answer
I don't recall ever seeing this type of cracking from age.  The only time I recall seeing cracking in a tail lamp is if it actually breaks the lens-- there isn't necessarily a piece missing, but the crack is all the way through the lens.  And this type of crack is due to some sort of impact with the lens.

Whether it's related to the collision, I cannot say.  I don't know exactly what the cracks look like, and I don't know the extent of the area of impact to assess whether it's likely it would have damaged the lamps.  My recommendation would be to get the opinion of someone at a body shop-- they see large amounts of impact damage frequently and have no reason to be biased in what they tell you.
