Hyundai Repair: 2001 Elantra Transmission Control Module, transmission control module tcm, transmission control module

Question
QUESTION: I just purchased a 2001 Elantra and it's having an issue with shifting.  Everything I have researched points to the Transmission control module.

Where is the transmission control module in the 2001 Elantra and how difficult is it to replace?

ANSWER: The transmission control module is located behind the left side of the dash and it's relatively easy to unbolt the bracket holding the module in place.

If I might ask, however, what is the issue you're having with shifting?  Transmission control module failures are very rare.  Has someone checked for diagnostic trouble codes?

QUESTION: Hi and thanks for the response.  I have not been able to have the diagnostics  trouble codes checked although the check engine light is on.

The problem I'm having is when I shift and push the gas it is as if the car isn't truly in gear.  I push the gas pedal, the car accelerates but it doesn't seem to really be in gear if that makes sense.  I'm hoping it's not the clutch or transmission going on me but it may well be.

ANSWER: Anytime there's an abnormal transmission operation problem, checking diagnostic trouble codes is an excellent place to start.  This will identify at a glance whether the transmission control module (TCM) has seen anything it thinks is abnormal and may lead you directly to the problem.

As far as the symptom is concerned, the problem is most likely in the transmission itself, making overhaul or replacement necessary.  But I've also seen problems with range switches and input speed sensors cause similar issues.  The easiest way to check these items is with a scan tool which will report the data stream from the TCM.

And lastly, I'm presuming you have an automatic transmission.  The fact that you make reference to the clutch causes me some concern that this isn't correct.  On the other hand, if you have a manual transmission, you'll have no transmission control module as the transmission will be entirely mechanical.

QUESTION: My car has a manual transmission and I wasn't sure if there was a TCM or not with it.  Thanks for the answers and explanations.  I downloaded a repair manual and and I plan on taking the car to the shop this week.

Answer
If you have some transfer of power to the wheels (but not much), you have a problem with your clutch-- most likely it's worn out and will need replacement.

If you have no power transfer at all to the wheels, the problem could also be with the shifter, cables, or transmission as well-- you'll need to have the car checked by a qualified mechanic to find out which.
