Hyundai Repair: Hyundai Elantra 2000 power steering belt/pulley is clicking, power steering pump, hyundai elantra

Question
I was told that my power steering belt is fraying(it is also now starting to click) b/c the wheel that the belt runs on is bent. Do I need to replace the whole power steering pump pulley or can I just replace the wheel & belt?  What is the level of difficulty in this repair if I buy the parts?

Answer
Hi, Kelly.  I'm a little confused by your differentiation between a "pulley" and a "wheel" on which the belt runs.  The wheel on which a belt runs is indeed called a pulley.  If you look at your power steering belt, you'll see that it runs around one pulley on the power steering pump and another pulley on the water pump.  And if you look at the water pump, you'll see two pulleys there.  One is for the belt that goes around the crankshaft, alternator, and water pump, and the other is for the power steering belt that goes around the water pump and power steering pump.

You'll need to replace the bent pulley(s) and the belt.  Either of the water pump pulleys and/or power steering pump pulley could be bent, requiring replacement.

This isn't a terribly difficult repair.  You'll need to loosen the nut or bolts holding the pulley in question in place, remove the tension on any belts going around that pulley, and then remove the nut/bolts and the pulley.  Then simply reverse the steps for the installation of the new pulley.
