Hyundai Repair: tailgate hydraulics, hyundai sante fe, warranty coverage

Question
QUESTION: Hi, the hydraulics on my 2002 Hyundai Sante Fe has gone out, making it difficult to lift. Is this something I can fix or replace myself?

ANSWER: If you can use a wrench and a screwdriver, yes.  The ends of the liftgate supports will either bolt on or will snap/unsnap via a clip.  Simply purchase new supports and use the new support as a guide to which method of attachment is used.

QUESTION: Thank you for the quick response!  How do I know what the part is called to get it and where is the best place to get specific parts for specific cars?  Also is this usually something that is covered under warranties?
Thanks again!!

Answer
Simply refer to it as a liftgate support or tailgate support.  That, along with the year and model of the vehicle (or VIN) should be sufficient.

You may be able to purchase replacements at your local parts supplier, or, if that isn't successful, you'll surely be able to purchase them at your local dealer.

This repair won't be covered under the new vehicle warranty as this warranty (5 years/60k miles) has already expired.  If you purchased a warranty that covers the vehicle for additional time beyond the new vehicle warranty, coverage will depend on the specific terms of the warranty you've purchased.  To find out whether the supports are covered under such a warranty, simply call the phone number listed on the paperwork for this warranty.  An agent there can tell you whether the repair will be covered.

Replace both supports at the same time.
