Hyundai Repair: Hyundai transmission, motor races, tranmission

Question
I recently bought a used 98 elantra. Before I put it on the road I had to do some work to it and found the wires to the overdrive on/off switch cut. I hooked them back up and when the tranmission goes to shift into overdrive the motor races as if it were in neutral. All the other gear shift fine and runs great, but no overdrive. What would couse this?

Answer
This is caused by a problem internal in the transmission.  To fix this, you'll need to replace or overhaul the transmission.  Otherwise, you can continue to drive it with the overdrive off.

Most likely, someone cut these wires on purpose to cover up the fact there was a problem with the transmission.  When all wires are cut, the transmission will not go into overdrive and the "overdrive off" lamp will not illuminate in the cluster.
