Hyundai Repair: Hyundai transmission, obd ii scan tool, hyundai santa fe

Question
I have an 01 hyundai santa fe with 132000 miles. drove around the corner and heard a click which i guess was the ck engine light. then i had no gears. motor was just revving in all gears. The rpms drop a couple hundred when you put it in drive or reverse like it wants to go but motor revs. 2.7 liter. Any help would be greatly appreciated. thx. John.

Answer
There's obviously some sort of issue between the engine and the drive wheels.

Does the speedometer register any speed when you attempt to drive the vehicle?  If so, the problem is likely in the transfer case (if four wheel drive) or one of the axles may have become disconnected from the transfer case or transmission.

If the speedometer stays at zero, then the problem is in the transmission.

Your check engine lamp will not make a clicking noise.  It does indicate that there's a problem that's been recognized by the engine or transmission control module.  This problem may or may not be related to the issue you're currently having.  The only way to determine why the lamp is on is to interrogate the engine and transmission control module for diagnostic trouble codes.  You'll need an OBD-II scan tool or code reader to do this.
