Hyundai Repair: ignitation, steering wheel lock, hundi elantra

Question
i just purchased a 2006 hundi elantra/im having a hard time turning the key to start the vehicle. Also getting a loud squelling noise when i turn the wheels L/R.

Answer
There are three basic issues that can cause the ignition to be difficult to turn: a problem with the key, a problem with the ignition lock, or the steering wheel being in the locked position.

Does the key turn easily in the door locks?  If so, the problem is not likely to be the key.

Is the steering wheel in the locked position when the problem occurs?  If so, this may be causing the problem.  The steering wheel will only lock in one position.  If it is turned to that position after turning off the ignition, the steering/suspension system will put pressure on the steering wheel lock, making the ignition hard to turn.  The immediate solution to this problem is to turn the wheel slightly to enable the ignition lock to turn easily.  To prevent the wheel from locking in the first place, before turning off the ignition, turn the wheel away from the position where it will lock.

If the steering wheel is not in the locked position and the key operates the door locks normally, the problem is likely with the ignition lock itself.  In this case, if you have less than 60,000 miles on the vehicle, the problem should still be covered under the new vehicle warranty.
